Champion is the only word to describe Nelson "Nellie" Ward. Nellie possessed that relentless drive that makes a champion. He was a likeable guy and those who knew him loved him. He was one who makes the world of racing an interesting one for the fans. With Nellie, racing was more than just a hobby, it was one of the biggest parts of his life, and there is consolation in the thought that he died doing what he loved. August 23, 1963 - we lost a great racer, sportsman and champion. I remember this day as if it were a shot heard around the world, while living in Oswego, New York. At Shangri-La Speedway in the second semi, starting ninth, he was running sixth after six laps, when his throttle stuck wide open going into the first turn. I was thirteen at the time, and I sent a sympathy card to Nellie Ward's family. Opening up the mail box one day in September I had received the above card from Nelson Ward's family. I have had this card and envelope ever since that time. It is one of my prized memorabilia possessions that I will always hold on to with honor. Nellie Ward in the BINGO 5 was an Oswego Speedway fan favorite, and supermodified favorite all through the US. |
